One day, during the last week of October, I came to my studio in the morning feeling an unbearable sadness. I had many reasons to feel this way. There was shooting throughout Israel,I had not seen the shadow of a tourist in ten days and business was nonexistent. When I arrived at my showroom, there was a message waiting for me on my machine from my friend Jodie in San Diego, simply asking me to return her call. When I did my mood changed immediately. I was given hope and comfort by her words.She told my that she and her friend Ann, came up with an idea to make apiece of jewelry that would show solidarity for Israel in this crucial moment and at the same time somehow help those affected financially by the crisis because their means for livelihood had been taken away.

As we discussed it over the phone we eventually decided that the words “Forever Israel” would ultimately convey the message that we wanted to express. Jodie asked me to draw a design of a pendant and bracelet with the engraving “Forever Israel” in both Hebrew and English. I am much better at creating then with drawing so instead of the sketch I began at once to sculpt the pieces out of sterling silver.By the end of the day I had finished what I believed to be the perfect pieces. On each one I engraved the skyline of Jerusalem thinking it signified the heart of the Jewish people and the center of the controversy that tears us apart.

The next morning, two samples were on their way to the states for Jodie and Ann’s approval. I was so excited just to have something to fill my days with, something I love to do,creating one of a kind pieces of Jewelry.While Ann and Jodie were awaiting the arrival of the samples, I immediately contacted a close friend of mine, an Armenian jeweler, with whom I had worked with many times before.I asked him if he would cast and produce the design for me, he said he would be happy to do so.However as the days went by and the situation became more graved he was unable to get to his factory in Beit Jala. Beit Jala had been sealed off due to the instances of shooting coming from that village into the Jewish enclave of Gilo.I then had to find another factory to do the work. You can see from my story that what is happening in Israel right now affects us much more deeply than the news portrays. I have always worked very closely with my Armenian friend but the current crisis does not allow this to happen.

So my friends, know that when you buy a “Forever Israel” pendant or bracelet, you are supporting Israel and that “family” that you can’t be with at this time.
